Baldur's Gate 3 Review: A CRPG Masterpiece That Raises the Bar

Larian Studios set out to make a game worthy of one of the most beloved RPG franchises in history — and not only did they succeed, they may have produced one of the greatest role-playing games ever created. Baldur's Gate 3 is a staggering achievement in scope, storytelling, and player agency.

What Is Baldur's Gate 3?

BG3 is a turn-based CRPG based on the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition ruleset. You create a character (or choose a pre-built "Origin" character), assemble a party of companions, and navigate a sprawling story set in the Forgotten Realms — all while trying to remove a mind flayer parasite from your brain.

Storytelling & Player Freedom

The narrative reacts to your choices in ways that feel genuinely meaningful. Decisions made in Act 1 can echo dramatically through Act 3. Want to play as a villain? Go ahead. Want to romance a vampire spawn? The game supports it. The breadth of reactivity is unlike almost anything else in the genre.

  • Over 174 hours of voiced dialogue
  • Dozens of unique class/race combinations that change NPC reactions
  • Multiple endings that feel earned, not arbitrary
  • Co-op support for up to 4 players

Combat System

The turn-based combat is deeply tactical. Every encounter rewards creative thinking — you can shove enemies off cliffs, combine spells for devastating environmental effects, or talk your way out of fights entirely. The D&D 5e ruleset translates surprisingly well to video game format.

Combat Highlights

  1. Verticality matters — high ground gives ranged attackers a significant advantage
  2. Surface effects (fire, ice, poison) can be used offensively or defensively
  3. Action Economy is king — understanding bonus actions separates good players from great ones

Visuals & Performance

The game is gorgeous. Character models are expressive, environments are richly detailed, and lighting is used masterfully in cutscenes. Performance has improved significantly since launch, though large Act 3 areas can still cause slowdowns on older hardware.
